Devki Arya Putri Patshala was started in the year 1910 in Punjabi Mohalla, Maisuma with an enrollment of 35 students by Smt. Devki Devi Chandhok Ji with
a view to educate under privileged, downtrodden female children hailing from mostly poor
and below poverty line families in society.
The institution was named after Mrs. Devki Devi Chandhok Ji who was the wife of
Mr. Charanjit Lal Chandhok and mother of Mr. Jaidev Chandhok. The School was organized under the control of Arya Samaj Trust,
Hazuri Bagh with the view to inculcate all the noble ideas and values among the society enshrined in the ancient Indo Aryan Culture.
The school is functioning under the administrative control of Arya Samaj Trust consisting of proper managing body.
The school was started up to middle standard in 1942 and with the passage of time it became full fledged High school in the
years 1950-1960 with a good enrollment in view of imparting quality education by the qualified post graduate female staff.
The admissions are open for the students of all creed and caste particularly students belonging to poor and down trodden
families of society. In 1910, the girl child was not educated especially in the poor families, the concept of giving education to girl child was totally
lacking. Devki Devi Chandhok Ji strongly felt that girls must be given education and started the school with the few children of neighborhood.
This tradition is continuing since that time and event today the orphan girls or girls belonging to poor families are admitted and educated totally free and are provided with free books.
In 1953 the school started “Sangeet Maha Vidyalaya” uder the guidance of Shri Shambhu Nath Sopori where all the prominent and well known singers of Kashmir got trained.
The school is among the very few school of valley who train students for NCC since early seventies.
